Here are a few photos taken just over one month after the December 26, 2004 earthquake and tsunami, when work was changing from emergency response and relief to cleanup and recovery.

Earthquake damage - A partially collapsed bank in Banda Aceh

Tsunami damage - Complete destruction of homes over many square miles. In these hard hit areas, few survived.

Tsunami damage - A boat carried downtown. Mud and debris have already been cleared from this part of town. Only the larger items remain.

Tsunami damage - Debris, representing the remains of many people's lives, fills neighborhoods. Some roads have been bulldozed to allow access.

Tsunami victims - Dr. Mardian Jusuf and his wife who lost their four children. See Feb 4th in the report for more of their story.

An artesian well near the ocean that survived a direct hit by the tsunami and is still flowing clean, safe water even though everything for miles around it was wiped from the map..

The same well.

Adji's Rig #1 drilling another artesian well (see January 31st in my log).
