Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC)
regulations 18 AAC 72 "Wastewater Disposal" cover installation
and use of on-site sewage treatment systems such as ExtremeSTPs.
The July 11, 2002 edition of these regulations is included on this
Website for reference (see Table of Contents). Regulation 18 AAC
72.035 states in essence that any sewage system other than a conventional
septic system and leach field on good ground serving a single family
home, duplex, or small commercial facility must have plans approved
by ADEC prior to installation. This means that in Alaska all ExtremeSTPs
must go through ADEC's plan approval process.
Article 2 of 18 AAC 72 pertains specifically to the
plan review process, but all parts of 18 AAC 72 should be reviewed
when preparing plans. The various checklists that ADEC engineers
use in reviewing plans are also included on this website for reference.
In some cases ADEC has granted lesser separation distances
to groundwater, direct discharge to surface water, and smaller size
leach fields for ExtremeSTP systems. However each system
is reviewed on its own merits and there is no such thing as a "blanket
approval" in the State of Alaska.
Regulations and checklists change frequently. Users
